Blood Orange French 75 Cocktail

4:21 PM 0

Enter one of my favorite cocktails—the classic French 75—but instead of using lemon juice, we infuse the drink with something to make it brilliant pinkish red—blood orange.

So pretty! And just as lovely to drink as the original, if not more so.

The classic French 75 is light and refreshing, and packs a little kick with gin. First on the scene a hundred years ago, it’s made with lemon juice, gin, sugar, and sparkling white wine.

One of the things that makes a French 75 work so well is the interplay of tart citrus with the gin, champagne, and simple syrup. Since we are swapping out the lemon juice in the classic recipe with blood orange, and blood oranges are more sweet than tart, I add a little lime juice to bring the drink more into a proper balance.

A few notes on the recipe. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can use any sealable container, even a quart sized mason jar. I used a wide-mouthed plastic sports water bottle as my shaker.
Blood oranges tend to be rather pulpy, so it’s a good idea to strain the juice at least once.
For extra flavor, put a few strips of blood orange zest into the simple syrup once it comes to a boil.
Enjoy!

Blood Orange French 75 Cocktail Recipe

Prep time: 10 minutes
Yield: Makes one cocktail

To make a twist of zest, use a vegetable peeler to peel a long strip of zest from the blood orange. Cut it into thin strips with a sharp knife. Twist it into a curly shape and hold it that way for a few seconds.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp (3/4 oz) freshly juiced blood orange juice, strained
  • 1/2 Tbsp (1/4 oz) lime juice
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp (3/4 oz) simple syrup*
  • 1 1/2 oz (3 Tbsp) gin
  • 1/4 cup (2 oz) champagne, prosecco, or other sparkling white wine
  • A twist of blood orange zest

*To make simple syrup, put equal parts of sugar and water into a small saucepan. (I usually make syrup with 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water, and store the excess for other uses.) Bring to a rolling boil. If you have a few strips of blood orange zest, add them to the water for extra flavor. When the sugar has all dissolved in the water, remove from heat and let cool. Remove the zest. Pour into a mason jar and store in the fridge.

Pomegranate and Rose Water Gin Fizz

4:19 PM 0

OK so my plan was to share this recipe with you this upcoming Friday, but I really couldn’t wait!!! These pomegranate and rose water gin fizz cocktails are just too pretty and delicious to NOT share with you right now.  They’re sweet, fragrant, fizzy and really, dangerously, easy to drink.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

And maybe you’re wondering “but Priya, why did you have to wait until Friday”? Well because I’m excited to tell you that we’re going to make Friday cocktails a regular thing on the blog! I know right? Yay! Every Friday we’ll post a cocktail/drink recipe for your drinking pleasure.  It may or may not be alcoholic, but you won’t be able to resist!  We’re talking all the drinks, smoothies, cocktails, coffees, and anything else that’s drinkable.

These pomegranate and rose water cocktails are first up on our list.  They’re creamy, sweet and smell incredible, thanks to the rose water! Gin is a new-found liquor for me, so I’m pretty excited to use it.  There have been so many distilleries and gin bars opening up lately that I felt like I needed to be part of this.

These cocktails are so incredibly good. I used pomegranate juice for tartness and the rose water just makes it smell amazing.  I sprinkled these cocktails with dried rose petal powder so it feels extra indulgent (oh you fancy!).  They’re creamy and sweet and the rose water hits your nostrils as you sip on it.  I’m totally in love with these (if you can’t tell already)!

How PERFECT would these be for a night with the girls.  These cocktails are incredibly easy to make and only take a few shakes in a martini mixer before you strain these over ice and look like a cocktail pro in front of everyone.  I added an extra couple drops of rose water into the glasses before pouring in the cocktail, then sprinkled rose petal powder over top for the pretty color and smell (you don’t have to do this but I REALLY hope that you do!).
